being the solo parent over school break leaves me with 2 options*. let the kids fend for themselves – see if they go all lord of the flies – or provide diversion. i’ve opted for diversion.
today we headed to the aquarium. and i told the kids we had all day. to be sure they saw all the aquatic life they could, because this opportunity doesn’t come around all that often. and never mind the fact that michael has taken 2 of the 3 to the fancy schmancy aquarium in bangkok. i took all three at one time. because i can handle it.
since we were already at the mall, we also went to the movie. we saw monsters vs. aliens. the kids liked it. i thought it was meh. but what i really enjoyed was the previews. monsters vs. aliens is rated pg. a pretty solid kid friendly rating. (here’s where i have to say had i had children younger than 9 with me, i might have not felt it was so kid friendly. i really, really dislike abhor crude humor in kids’ movies. it’s absolutely unnecessary.) back to the previews… well, here’s what the audience full of impressionable children got their whistles whetted to see.
the first preview was for UP. no problems with this one. most appropriate – it’s the next disney/pixar movie coming out this summer. should be great for the kids.
next up, the preview for terminator salvation. because what small child doesn’t want to know that we’re just 9 years away from total annihilation.. unless christian bale and the hybrid robot human can make nice and save the world.
then there was the totally appropriate for the preteen and under crowd new julia roberts/clive owen flick duplicity. what’s a little sexual content while waiting for the animated feature to begin.
and how about the new star trek. there was only one sex scene sort of hinted at during this preview. and by hinted at i mean shown – no nudity, just a bit of the bump and grind. i think whoever is casting for this movie is brilliant – sylar playing spock – that’s stellar. and chris pine… well, i’ve never heard of him, but pretty sure he would be a lovely addition to the cabana boys over at the women’s colony.
and, finally, what kids’ movie isn’t complete without a trailer for wolverine? more mutants, more action and plenty of wholesome entertainment with hugh jackman.
now that i think about the previews, i’m wondering if maybe my meh impression of the movie was not because of the movie itself… maybe it had more to do with this.
*there are probably more than 2 options. but i’ve only allowed myself those 2, i get confused when too many choices are presented.
