apparently when you tell people you are moving to another continent they expect that you have visited it – at least once. and when you tell them you haven’t they generally look at you like your mad and try to find something encouraging to say – you know like “oh, well that will be nice” or “that’s very brave of you”. then when they discover how little you know about the culture you’re moving to they just start feeling sorry for your kids. i happen to think it’s very funny that my kids believe the best representation of asian food is panda express. everyone else thinks this is cause for concern. I am also pretty sure my boys think the home of pokemon and nintendo must be the coolest place ever. we can’t seem to convince them that Thailand is not that place. Iive got one who hopes we have a great big cherry blossom shade tree in the backyard. so much to learn… why rush it?
And for those of you who might be a little concerned about this, we will be receiving some kind of counseling about Thailand and the culture… just not sure what that looks like, yet.

A few things I have learnt from having Thai friends over the years..
1. Never ever say anything rude or critical of the Thai royal family. This isn’t just common curtesy; it’s the law.
2. It’s considered extremely rude to point in Thailand
3. Do not touch anyone on the head, a spot which is considered sacred.
4.Do dress modestly. Wearing long pants, and clean, neat clothes, will gain you an extra measure of respect.
May I recommend Culture Shock: Thailand? Close friends of my family moved around a lot for work and they found this series very handy.

number 4 is what i’m somewhat worried about now. i have read that modesty is very important, but have seen many different definitions of what is considered modest in thailand.
thanks for the book recommendation – i’ve been looking for one that will be good but isn’t just about traveling in thailand.
